Having built their brand on wedges, we always take notice when Cleveland releases something new. We were certainly not let down with the introduction of RTX-3. It’s one of, if not the best wedge on the market. Cleveland spent a lot of time refining this wedge from the previous RTX 2.0. RTX-3 features Micro Cavity Technology where the shaft is inserted slightly shallower in to the hosel with a “hollow pocket” left at the bottom of the hosel. The aim is to reduce weight in the hosel and redistribute it in the clubhead to make it more forgiving. It achieves this and also moves the sweetspot to the dead centre of the wedge. This is something very few have managed to do because a wedge has most of its weight in the heel area (where the hosel is). RTX-3 has a V-sole, similar to the VT Sole found in Srixon irons, which improves turf interaction and reduces the chances of the wedge digging prematurely. Laser milling has evolved to further increase surface roughness for more spin. We’re told that the new laser milling lasts up to 3 times longer than previous generations. The most exciting innovation is the varied groove depths that become progressively more aggressive as the loft increases. This creates maximum spin around the green with a 60 degree but does not make the ball spin of the green with a 46 degree. It’s a great touch and substantially enhances the performance. As with the RTX 2.0, the new version is available in the CB and MB heads with lofts ranging from 46 to 64 degrees. Wedges are also available in a traditional chrome finish, glare resistant black finish and a tour preferred RAW finish which rusts over time.
Our testing proves the new RTX-3 has the tightest shot dispersion and closest average distance from the target compared to select leading competitors and any wedge we have ever made.
