Exciting times, Mizuno the masters of forging since 1968, has released a new iron series called the JPX 919’s. There are 3 models available in the new series, the Hot Metal, Forged and Tour irons. The 919 Hot Metal irons and Mizuno’s most powerful irons they’ve ever produced. So we buckled up before we put them through their paces.
The 919 HM irons have a new multi-thickness high strength face for maximum ball speed and forgives off the face. We have to admit, this is the longest Mizuno iron we’ve ever hit, very impressive distances we got from the 919 HM’s. The feel off the new face is incredible, we were expecting a very similar feel to the 900 HM irons, but were pleasantly surprised.
The HM irons are Mizuno’s most forgiving irons, so you’d expect them to be more draw-biased than the other irons in the 919 series. There is more than enough offset on the 919 HM irons to help square the face and draw the ball without too much effort.
The standard shaft offering in the JPX 919 HM irons in the mid-weight Nippon Pro Modus 3 105. Not only is this one of the most stable shafts the game has to offer, but it’s also made from spring steel for maximum power delivery. We’re happy to see Mizuno continuing with this shaft as the results we’ve got from this shaft have been superb.
We were very happy with how the irons performed off the turf as well. Getting to the ball in tight lie situations has been improved now with the introduction of a beveled sole. This is nothing new in the game but it’s good to see that Mizuno recognize the benefits of this feature on the sole.
Mizuno’s 919 HM irons are very strong in loft, which could pose a problem. You don’t want to have your iron shots coming into the green that low that you can’t stop them on the green. Enter “Stability Frame”, this technology Mizuno say will get the ball stopping easily on the greens without having to sacrifice any of the 919 HM’s power.
If you’re looking for a set of irons manufactured by one of the best manufacturers in the world, offering the ultimate in forgiveness with loads of power in your hands. Give the 919 HM irons a try and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
