Ping have added a new member to the very successful G400 family of drivers, in the form of the
G400 Max driver. Not too many significant changes over the G400, but what they have changed, has
made the Ping G400 Max the most forgiving and stable driver ever made.
What makes it so forgiving? The Ping engineers saved weight from around the perimeter of the
head, this helped them to increase the size of the head from the G400’s 445cc size to 460cc’s in the
G400 Max. This combined with a 50% heavier tungsten weight that they placed deeper and further
back than in the G400 head, results in the the highest MOI we’ve ever seen. This simply equates to
the G400 Max being the most forgiving, consistent, stable and accurate driver we’ve ever tested.
What we found very surprising was that the G400 Max launched around a degree higher than the
G400, with the same loft and shaft. However the backspin rate stayed fairly low, resulting in a long,
penetrating ball flight. The slightly higher launch angle helps to reduce side spin, which in turn
improves accuracy and control. The G400 Max also has lower backspin resulting in more roll for
added distance. Despite it not being listed as a draw biased driver, we did notice that the G400 Max
promotes a slight draw flight.
Similar to the G400, the G400 Max has the Turbulators and the Dragonfly technology on the crown
for weight saving and faster ball speeds. Ping’s adjustable hosel stays in the G400 Max, allowing you
to adjust the driver 1° up or down in loft. It also retains the same forged face the G400 has for that
solid feel at impact.
What’s the down side? The G400 Max has a much louder sound than the G400 at impact, it’s not a
bad sound, but it may not be for everyone.
Who needs this driver? At first glance we thought the Ping G400 Max driver was aimed just at the
mid to high handicap golfers looking to maximise forgiveness and control. But in truth, the driver
will suit most types of golfers looking for real distance with unbelievable forgiveness. The G400 Max
launches the ball extremely easily with a draw biased ball flight. Definitely worth a test drive.
Introducing a great fit for players looking to add distance through unprecedented stability and forgiveness. Longer, straighter drives result from the highest total MOI ever in a PING driver, the function of extreme tungsten weighting and a higher-density backweight in the multi-material 460cc design.
