How to Choose the Right Golf Equipment for Your Child

Choosing golf clubs for your child can feel overwhelming, especially with how quickly kids grow. At The Pro Shop, we stock a wide range of junior golf equipment from top brands like US Kids Golf, TaylorMade, Cleveland, and Wilson. But the truth is, getting the right fit is about more than just picking a brand. it’s about choosing clubs that match your child’s height, strength, and skill level.

Let’s break it down so you can make an informed decision.

Why Fit Matters More Than Age

Many parents make the mistake of choosing clubs based on age or just grabbing the smallest adult set they can find. But children’s swings, strength, and posture are still developing. Ill-fitting clubs can:

  • Lead to bad swing habits

  • Cause frustration and poor contact

  • Even result in injury from awkward, repeated movements

That’s why brands like US Kids Golf have designed junior clubs using a height-based fitting system, rather than relying on age or guesswork.

US Kids Golf: The Most Precise Fitting System

US Kids Golf offers the most comprehensive junior range and the most precise fit. Their system includes:

● Height-Based Fitting
Start by measuring your child’s height in centimetres or inches (without shoes). This is the most important step! Each US Kids club set is designed for a specific height range, with changes in:

  • Club length (to support good posture and natural swing mechanics)

  • Club head weight (light for beginners, heavier as they grow stronger)

  • Shaft flex (optimised for each stage of development and swing speed)

● 10 Unique Size Ranges
US Kids clubs cover kids from 99 cm to 168 cm (39" to 66"), increasing in 7.6 cm (3") increments. This allows kids to grow through the size range, moving up as needed without drastic changes to feel or swing dynamics.

What About Other Brands?

While US Kids has the most granular fitting options, brands like Cleveland, TaylorMade, and Wilson also make excellent junior sets, typically in 3 to 5 size groupings (e.g. small, medium, large or by age ranges). These are great options for kids who are growing steadily or have already made a start with a few loose golf clubs but are ready to graduate to a full set of their own.

Full Set vs. Individual Clubs: What Should You Buy?

If your child is just beginning to show interest in golf, but you’re not yet sure whether it will stick, it might be smarter to start with one or two loose clubs. A putter and a wedge or wedge/9-iron are great introductory clubs that kids can use in the garden, at the driving range, or during casual rounds with parents. This approach allows them to experience the basics of the game without the upfront commitment of a full set. Remember in the early stages of a child's golf journey it's a great opportunity to build solid foundations by starting from the shortest shots and steadily growing towards longer shots. So starting off with a putter only isn't a bad option, once putting has been mastered graduate to chipping, then pitching, full iron shots and finally fairway woods and a driver. This approach really helps to alleviate frustration by mastering simple skills first before building onto them with more complex movements. There is also the much more easily measurable success reward of getting the ball in the hole.

However, if your child already enjoys golf or has expressed a strong interest, then a complete junior package set is often the better choice. These sets typically include:

  • Driver or fairway wood

  • 1–2 irons

  • Putter

  • Matching bag

They’re well-balanced, size-appropriate, and help young golfers develop good swing habits from the start — all while keeping everything together in one bag.

If your child is enrolled in lessons or plays regularly, you may want to explore loose clubs as well, either to:

  • Replace worn-out or outgrown clubs

  • Add specialty clubs (like a wedge or hybrid)

  • Customise their bag to suit their growing skills

Final Tip: Ask for Help

Our in-store teams are trained to fit junior golfers accurately. We’ll measure your child’s height and help you compare sets across all our junior brands. This ensures your young golfer gets clubs that are comfortable, confidence-boosting, and built for their growth stage.
